  • Description

Mauritania's Foreign Minister has accused Algeria of responsibility for the gun attack on the Mauritanian ambassador to France, on Thursday (7 July) in which the ambassador, Mr Ahmed Ould Janahallah was shot three times and critically wounded. The Foreign Minister, Mr. Ahmed Laraki, was speaking in Paris while the ambassador lay seriously ill in the American hospital in the French capital.

SYNOPSIS: Ambassador, Ahmed ould Janahallah was ambushed by gunmen as he was leaving home for the Embassy. The gunmen escaped immediately afterwards.

While surgeons fought to save the ambassador's life, an anonymous telephone caller said the attack was made by the little-known 'Mustapha Sayed el Wali Brigado', named after a leader of the Polisario Front fighting for the independence of the Western Sahara from Morocco and Mauritania.

The Polisario Front has denied involvement in the attack. Meanwhile, to Mauritanian Foreign Minister, Mr Laraki told newsmen responsibility rested entirely with Algeria, which backs the Polisario Front.

The Ambassador also reminded newsmen that the Polisario was not recognised by the Organisation of African Unity, and that a request for recognition was refused at last year's OAU summit in Mauritius. Algeria was responsible, he said, because it was still giving support and aid to the Polisario despite the official OAU policy of non-recognition.

The Western Sahara controversy was raised again at this year's OAU summit, which has just ended in ?abon, but no solution was reached. Instead, the issue is going to be the subject of a special OAU meeting in Zambia in October.
