  • Description

Queen Elizabeth has approved British Admiralty Board suggestions for modernised versions of the present "square fig" for junior rating naval men.

And on board the HMS Belfast in London on Thursday (11 September) the Royal Navy staged a fashion display to show off their new look sailors.

It is hoped to start issuing the new rigs to men joining the Navy in 1977.

While retaining the essential features of the present uniform, the new design incorporates a number of improvements.

The new jumper is lined, and the suit will be a superior quality medium-weight navy blue worsted serge material. "Bell bottoms" are on the way out in favour of trousers flared from the knee and vertically creased.

The blue collar is secured by Velcro fastenings to the jumper, which has integral black silk facings.

Several other new designs in uniforms are due to be introduced by the Navy towards the end of 1976.
