Background: A hand grenade was thrown into a restaurant in East Jerusalem yesterday(19 Sept) wounding 15 people. Two United States tourists were among the wounded but the terrorist responsible for the attack escaped after being chased by by-standers.
The restaurant was crowded at the time of the attack and the grenade explosion lightly injured a middle-aged and a boy from a party of tourists from Chicago. The rest of the casualties were local residents including a policeman. A fourteen-year-old Arab boy was seriously injured.
After the attack the assailant threw away a second grenade and escaped after a short chase. Police were given an extensive description of the grenade thrower and sealed off the area and detained scores of people for interrogation.
SYNOPSIS: Fifteen people were wounded after a grenade was thrown into a crowded restaurant in East Jerusalem on Saturday night.
Hastily deserted meals testified to the suddenness of the attack and the explosion left a hole in the floor. A man and a boy from a party of United States tourists at the restaurant were among the wounded.
Police quickly cordoned off the area but the assailant had escaped after throwing away a second hand grenade while being chased by by-standers.
The wounded, including the United States boy from Chicago, were taken to hospital. He was only lightly wounded Police were given an extensive description of the grenade thrower and scores of suspects were reported to have been detained.
