  • Description

Rampaging Buddhist youths in Saigon have set fire to more vehicles -- this time a South Vietnamese police jeep and two private cars owned by Americans. The vehicles were completely destroyed during the fifth successive day of violent protest against Premier Nguyen Cao Ky's military government.

While the mob rampaged through Saigon's streets, five Buddhist monks went to the City Hall and demanded to be imprisoned. They had failed in attempts to be arrested.

The mobs, which included several Buddhist monks, were dispersed by tear gas grenades thrown by police.

(Earlier, Buddhist leaders in Saigon called for a nation-wide three-day general strike as part of their campaign to oust Premier Ky.)
