  • Description

A SEVEN-MAN UNITED STATES TRADE MISSION WILL SPEND THIS WEEK IN THE IVORY COAST CAPITAL OF ABIDJAN. THE MISSION IS HAVING DISCUSSIONS WITH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE AND BUSINESSMEN AIMED AT INCREASING TRADE BETWEEN THE IVORY COAST AND THE UNITED STATES.

THE MISSION, WHICH IS IN THE IVORY COAST FOR 11 DAYS, IS HEADED BY MR. STEPHEN CONGER, THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF THE AFRICAN DIVISION OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE. THEY REPRESENT 275 AMERICAN FIRMS WHO ARE LOOKING FOR BUSINESS CONTACTS IN THE IVORY COAST. THEY HAVE SET UP A SMALL TRADE EXHIBITION AT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BUILDING IN ABIDJAN, WHERE THE TALKS ARE BEING HELD.

THE PRODUCTS FROM 12 AMERICAN FIRMS INCLUDE PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, LIGHT-WEIGHT POWER SAWS AND INSULATING BLOCKS.

MANY OF THE TOP IVORY COAST BUSINESSMEN ARE FRENCH. THE IVORY COAST HAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED STRONG ECONOMIC LINKS WITH ITS FORMER COLONIAL POWER, AND IS AN ASSOCIATE-MEMBER OF THE COMMON MARKET.

THE UNITED STATES ARE ANXIOUS TO INCREASE THEIR EXPORTS TO THE IVORY COAST AS THE BALANCE OF TRADE IS AT PRESENT HEAVILY AGAINST THEM.
