  • Description

MEN OF THE 40 ROYAL MARINE COMMANDOS AND 2/10TH GURKHA RIFLES WERE GIVEN A ROUSING WELCOME IN SINGAPORE ON JULY 5 ON THEIR RETURN FROM SARAWAK WHERE THEY WERE STATIONED SINCE APRIL THIS YEAR.

THEIR WIVES AND CHILDREN ANXIOUSLY WAVED FROM THE ROYAL NAVAL BASE WHARF, NORTH OF SINGAPORE, THE MOMENT H.M.S."ALBION", A BRITISH TROOPSHIP, STEAMED SLOWLY INTO THE BASE WITH THE MEN LINING ON ITS DECK.

THE MARINES AND GURKHAS WERE RUSHED TO SARAWAK IMMEDIATELY AFTER ARMED BANDITS FROM ACROSS THE INDONESIAN BORDER ATTACKED A POLICE STATION IN THE TOWN OF TEBEDU SOMETIME IN APRIL.

TEBEDU, WHICH IS SOME SIXTY MILES SOUTHWEST OF KUCHING, THE SARAWAK CAPITAL, IS ONLY TWO MILES AWAY FROM THE INDONESIAN BORDER.

THE "ALBION" ALSO BROUGHT BACK TO SINGAPORE TWO HELICOPTER SQUADRONS OF THE ROYAL NAVY AND SOME HEAVY EQUIPMENT BELONGING TO THE MARINE AND GURKHA COMPANIES.

AN ARMY SPOKESMAN IN SINGAPORE SAID THAT IN A FEW DAYS TIME, THE "ALBION" WILL SAIL FOR THE BORNEO TERRITORIES WITH TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT TO REPLACE THOSE THAT RETURNED TO SINGAPORE.
