  • Description

On Wednesday (December 5) the United Nations General Assembly deferred until next September a Chinese led bid to expel the Khmer Republic's pro-U.S. Lon Nol government from the organisation.

The Chinese and many other countries wanted to give the Khmer Republic's seat to exiled Prince Norodom Sihanouk's regime. Prince Sihanouk is at present living in Peking.

The move to postpone the decision was passed by only two votes. Most South East Asian countries, the United States and some western European countries voted for the measure. Communist countries and most Arab and African States voted against with more than 20 abstentions.
