Swimming ... At the World Swimming Championship in West Berlin, Joe Bottom of the United?

  • Description

Swimming ... At the World Swimming Championship in West Berlin, Joe Bottom of the United States narrowly missed equalling his world record when he won the men's 100 metres butterfly on Saturday (August 26). But, in the women's 200 metres butterfly, fellow American, Tracy Caulkins, managed to do just that.

SYNOPSIS: Fifteen-year-old Tracy Caulkins, from Nashville, in Tennessee, is already being hailed as the "wonder girl" of the swimming world. Before this race started, she had three gold medals to her credit, although it was only her first year in world-class swimming. The world record for the women's 200 metres butterfly was held by East Germany's Andrea Pollack, in land two. But this time, the Berlin girl only managed to make third position.

In the final 50 metres, Nancy Hogshead of the United States in lane five, joined her American compatriot in the battle for lead position. But Tracy Caulkins fought off the challenge and went on to win her fourth gold medal with a time of two minutes 9.87 seconds.

Nancy Hogshead took second place, less than two seconds behind 15-year-old Tracy.

In the men's 100 metres butterfly, America's Joe Bottom, in lane four, went into an early lead.

Just behind was another American, Greg Jagenburg, in lane three. Last year, 23-year-old joe Bottom set a new world record for the same event. But, although he came first, he was unable to better his own record of 54.18 seconds.

Second was Greg Jagenburg, and third Paer Arvidsson of Sweden.
