  • Description

British Opposition leader, Margaret Thatcher, said a final Middle East settlement should recognise the Palestinian problem, guarantee secure borders to all states, and ensure withdrawal form occupied lands.

She was speaking at the end of a four-day visit to Egypt and Syria during which she met the leaders of both countries.

She told a news conference that conditions for the Middle east settlement contained in the United Nation's Security Council's resolution 242, were the basis for peace in the Middle East.

Although the resolution had not been implemented, it had a considerable influence on the next stage in negotiations, she said.

Mrs. Thatcher said she hoped the Security Council debate on the Middle East would take a positive step towards settling the problem.

She said she had had "very frank and very useful" talks with the Syrian President, Hafez AL-Assad and other officials during her two day visit to Damascus, the Syrian capital.

She also visited a Palestinian refugee camp and the devastated town of kuneitra on the Golan Heights.
