Background: On Monday, (2 December), the Soviet Union launched the Soyuz manned spacecraft -- Soyuz 16 --into orbit to test the docking gear which will be used in next year's American-Soviet space link-up.

Colonel Anatoli Filipchenko and flight engineer Nikolai Rukavishnikov, who manned the spacecraft, were expected to carry out a docking rehearsal by themselves with the help of what Colonel Filipchenko described as a "special imitating ring."
He told Tass News Agency before launching that there would be 20 technical operations to help the two cosmonauts link up and then separate with the imitating ring.

The exercises would be carried out as if they were docking with the U.S. Apollo craft.

The Soyuz and Apollo will be equipped with similar docking units, each fitted with two side clamps known as "structural latches", which will grasp one another at right angles.
