  • Description

BRITAIN'S JIM CLARK (NO. 1) NARROWLY BEAT HIS LOTUS TEAM MATE TREVOR TAYLOR (NO. 2) IN A THRILLING FINISH TO SATURDAY'S RAND GRAND PRIX MOTOR RACE AT JOHANNESBURG - "CURTAIN-RAISER" TO THE DECISIVE SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND PRIX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT IN TWO WEEK'S TIME.

THE TWO BRITISH DRIVERS DOMINATED THE RACE AND WERE NEVER CHALLENGED. AFTER 50 LAPS OF THE KYALAMI CIRCUIT, THEY CROSSED THE LINE ALMOST TOGETHER, WITH TAYLOR TIMED ONLY A QUARTER OF A SECOND BEHIND CLARK, WHO AVERAGED MORE THAN 95 M.P.H. OVER THE 50 LAPS. HE COVERED THE 127 MILES IN 1 HOUR, 20 MINUTES, 47.42 SECONDS.

ALTHOUGH THE RACE DID NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, CLARK'S SUCCESS BOOSTED HIS CHANCES OF WINNING THE CROWN LATER THIS MONTH.

CLARK IS THE ONLY DRIVER IN A POSITION TO ROB GRAHAM HILL, ANOTHER BRITISH DRIVER, OF THE TITLE. IF CLARK WINS THE SOUTH AFRICAN GRAND PRIX, AND HILL FAILS TO GAIN A POINT, 25-YEAR-OLD CLARK WILL GAIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

FORMER WORLD MOTOR CYCLE CHAMPION JOHN SURTEES OF BRITAIN (NO. 8) FINISHED IN A LOLA.
