  • Description

A vast new social club has been opened in Peking to cater for foreign visitors. The number of foreigners visiting China is expected to increase as the country strengthens its new link with the rest of the world.

The building replaces the old International Club, which had provided foreigners in Peking with meals and recreation since 1902.

The new club contains indoor tennis courts, a heated outdoor swimming pool, a cinema, billiard tables, a restaurant, a library and a hairdresser's.

The club's decor matches the scale of its facilities, with large oriental carpets and ornate murals. One of the most spectacular is a large mosaic, depicting the Great Wall of China, made from lacquered egg shells.

SYNOPSIS: Foreign visitors to the People's Republic of China are being entertained at a new international club which has been built near the centre of Peking.

China's ping-pong diplomacy and its forging of new links with the outside world is expected to attract many more foreigners to what was once known as The Forbidden City. The building replaces the old International Club, which had served the city's foreigners since nineteen hundred and two.

The spacious rooms of the new club contain many examples of Chinese painting. Although the subjects are traditional, the methods and materials used show a modern inventiveness. The artists have drawn from China's varied flora and fauna for many of the paintings. Giant pandas form the motif for a glass screen in the foyer of the club's cinema.

Sportsmen are well catered for at the club, but for those who are less energetic, there is a billiard room. The other extensive facilities include a hairdressing salon, library and restaurant. Staff from the old International Club have been transferred to the new building, which houses art forms art forms such as a panoramic mosaic of the Great Wall of China. The mural was made entirely from egg shells painted with coloured lacquers.

No matter how much snow falls in Peking during the winter, visitors to the club will be able to swim comfortably in the heated outdoor pool. And the club is already becoming a sight-seeing must for visitors from other parts of China.
