The Maple Leaf indoor athletics meeting in Toronto, Canada, on Friday (14 February) produced a string of world-class performances.

In the women's 50 yards hurdles final, East Germany's Annelie Ehrhardt broke the world indoor record she had set in a heat less than an hour before.

The 24-year-old Miss Ehrhardt was clocked at 6.2 seconds, which was a tenth of a second faster than her heat time.

The old mark, set at these games in 1972 by Pam Johnson of the United States, at 6.4 seconds, had been equalled by several women.

In the men's 50 yards hurdles final, Danny Smith of the United States equalled the world indoor record with a time of 5.8 seconds. Five other men hold that time.

The crowd of over 16,000 people was brought to its feet a little later by a thrilling men's three mile event - even though it did not produce a world record.

The favourite, Mirutus Yihfter of Ethiopia, put up a superb performance of paced, distance running to run out a comfortable winner.
