  • Description

THOUGH IT CARRIES VERY LITTLE TRAFFIC AT PRESENT, A HIGHWAY LINKING NEPAL WITH TIBET AND, ULTIMATELY, THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, HAS JUST BEEN DECLARED OPEN BY THE NEPALESE GOVERNMENT. IT IS THE FIRST SUCH ROAD LINE TO BE OPENED SINCE THE DALAI LAMA FLED FROM TIBET IN 1959.

THE SECTION OF THE ROAD OPENED BY THE NEPALESE LINKS THE CAPITAL, KATMANDU, WITH THE VILLAGE OF KODARI, CLOSE TO THE BORDER WITH TIBET.

THE BORDER CROSSING GIVES WESTERN OBSERVERS A VANTAGE POINT ACROSS THE BORDER. BARRACKS ON THE TIBETAN SIDE WERE STRATEGICALLY PLACED TO GUARD A BORDER BRIDGE CLOSE TO THE TIBETAN VILLAGE OF KHASA.

ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE BORDER, THE ROAD -- ORIGINALLY BUILT BY THE CHINESE --RUNS ON TO LHASA AND PROVIDES A HIGHWAY LINK WITH PEKING.
