    THE BEKAA VALLEY IN SOUTHERN LEBANON WAS HEAVILY FLOODED YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) AFTER HEAVY RAINS HAD CAUSED THE LITANI RIVER TO OVERFLOW ITS BANKS. SIMILAR FLOODING HAS ALSO SWEPT OTHER PARTS OF THE MIDDLE EAST RECENTLY.

    THE LITANI RIVER ROSE ABOVE ITS BANKS AFTER ITS TRIBUTARIES OF SMALL STREAMS FLOODED NEARBY AREAS. THE WATER INUNDATED MANY FIELDS AND FARMS IN THE REGION AND CAUSED FLOODING IN TOWNS AND VILLAGES.

    IN DAMASCUS, THE SYRIAN CAPITAL, MAIN SQUARES AND STREETS WERE UNDER NEARLY SIX FEET (1.8 METRES) OF FLOOD WATERS LAST THURSDAY (23 JANUARY) AFTER HEAVY RAIN HAD SWEPT MOST PARTS OF THE COUNTRY. THE SWOLLEN BARADA RIVER DESTROYED 20 HOUSES AND DAMAGED 150 OTHERS IN DAMASCUS.

    IN NORTHERN SYRIA LAST SATURDAY, FLOOD WATERS OF THE EUPHRATES RIVER INUNDATED 2,000 MUD HOUSES, LEAVING 8,000 PEOPLE HOMELESS. NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED INT HE FLOODS WHICH COVERED ABOUT 3,000 ACRES OF FARM LAND AROUND THE TOWN OF DEIR AL-ZOR.

    FLOODING ALSO AFFECTED LARGE PARTS OF SOUTHERN AND NORTH-EASTERN IRAN OVER LAST WEEKEND. ON SATURDAY, IT WAS REPORTED THAT ABOUT 20 PEOPLE HAD BEEN KILLED. THE FOLLOWING DAY, PEOPLE IN THE SOUTHERN IRAN CITY OF AHVAS WERE TOLD TO EVACUATE THEIR HOMES AFTER WATER FROM THE RIVER KARUN DESTROYED HUNDREDS OF HOMES AND THREATENED TO SWAMP THE ENTIRE CITY.
