    A PARTY OF 23 YOUNG WEST GERMANS ARRIVED IN ABIDJAN ON THURSDAY TO BEGIN TOURS OF VOLUNTARY SERVICE IN THE IVORY COAST.

    THEY ARE AMONG 107 MEMBERS OF THE WEST GERMAN PEACE CORPS WHO LEFT BONN THIS WEEK TO BEGIN WORKING IN AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA.

    THE WEST GERMAN PEACE CORPS - SIMILAR TO THE PEACE CORPS OPERATED BY THE UNITED STATES - WAS STARTED IN 1961. THE ONE THOUSANDTH VOLUNTEER SINCE THE SERVICE STARTED, NORBERT KNEID, A SURVEYOR, WAS AMONG THE GROUP WHO LANDED IN ABIDJAN.

    MR. KNEIB WAS WELCOMED BY THE WEST GERMAN AMBASSADOR, MR. RUDOLF JUNGLES. HE WILL WORK IN THE BOAKE DISTRICT IN THE IVORY COAST.

    A NUMBER OF YOUNG WOMEN WERE ALSO IN THE TEAM. THERE WARE NOW 93 YOUNG WEST GERMANS WORKING ON PEACE CORPS PROJECTS IN THE IVORY COAST.

    SEVENTEEN OTHERS ARRIVED ON THE SAME FLIGHT. THEY WILL WORK IN CAMEROON, UPPER VOLTA, GHANA AND DOHOMEY.
