Background: Thousands of Austrians filed past the body of President Franz Jonas on Friday (26 April) as his coffin lay in state in the Parliament building in central Vienna. The two-day lying in state began with the laying of a wreath at the foot of the copper coffin by Chancellor Bruno Kreisky. President Jonas died of cancer on Wednesday at the age of 74. He will be buried on Monday.
President Jonas was the fourth President since the post-war Republic was founded in 1945. He was first elected in 1965 and was half-way through his second six-year term when he died. He lay critically ill in a clinic in Vienna for five weeks before his death.
Presidential elections will be held on 23 June.
