  • Description

LIFE IN ZANZIBAR WAS RETURNING TO NORMAL TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AFTER LAST WEEKEND'S SUCCESSFUL LEFT-WING REVOLT AGAINST THE ARAB-DOMINATED GOVERNMENT OF THE SULTAN. AS THE NEW CABINET OF PRESIDENT ABEID KARUME MET, MINISTERS DENIED THAT MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE OLD REGIME WOULD BE EXECUTED. VOLUNTEERS CLEARED STREETS OF DEBRIS, WORKERS RETURNED TO THEIR JOBS, PUBLIC SERVICES GOT GOING AGAIN - BUT MOST SHOPS REMAINED CLOSED.

YESTERDAY, AS ZANZIBAR REMAINED VIRTUALLY CUT OFF FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD, A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN FLEW OVER THE ISLAND. BESIDES TAKING AERIAL SHOTS OF THE ISLAND, THE PHOTOGRAPHED THE SHIP ON WHICH THE OVERTHROWN SULTAN WAS MAKING HIS ESCAPE. FILM ALSO SHOWS REFUGEES LEAVING THE AMERICAN DESTROYER 'MANLEY' IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, AND KENYA'S JOMO KENYATTA WELCOMING TANGANYIKA'S PRESIDENT NYERERE IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

THE KENYAN AND TANGANYIKAN LEADERS WERE LATER JOINED AT A PRIVATE MEETING, BY PRIME MINISTER OBOTE OF UGANDA. SINCE THAT MEETING BOTH KENYA AND UGANDA HAVE EXTENDED FULL DIPLOMATIC RECOGNITION TO THE NEW REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT IN ZANZIBAR, WHILE TANGANYIKA HAS GRANTED "TRADITIONAL RIGHTS OF ASYLUM AND TRANSIT" TO THE OVERTHROWN SULTAN. PREVIOUSLY HE HAD BEEN REFUSED PERMISSION TO LAND IN KENYA.

THE PARTY OF REFUGEES LANDED FROM THE AMERICAN DESTROYER, INCLUDED 18 BRITONS, IN ADDITION TO AT LEAST ONE MEMBER OF THE STAFF OF THE AMERICAN 'PROJECT MERCURY' SATELLITE TRACKING STATION IN ZANZIBAR.
