  • Description

After leading from start to finish, the Italian team of Sandro Munari and Mario Mannucci roared to victory in the Monte Carlo rally today (Friday, January 24) -- just three years after notching up the first all-Italian win in this motor-rallying classic.

Munari and Mannucci drove their green and white Lancia Stratos ahead of the field from the start - and stayed there. The combined assaults of a powerful French Alpine Renault team and a team of fellow-countrymen in Fiats, failed to make any impression.

For the entire 1,400 miles (2,300 kms) the two Italians held out alone in a brilliant display of controlled driving. They judged to perfection the limit between staying ahead of their rivals and easing the strain on their car, and in the end were driving well within themselves.

Second were the Finnish rally champion Hannu Mikkola and Jean Todt in a Fiat and third were Markku Allen and Iglka Kivimaki in another Fiat.
