Background: Tension in the Basque country has been rising in the last few days, as Basque Nationalists celebrate their "National Day" on April 11th. Police expected there to be a big demonstration in Bilbao by Basque sympathizers, but though there were an unusually large number of people in the streets, they were apparently deterred from demonstrating by the large number of armed policemen present in the city.
There has been comparative peace in the north of Spain since the controversy earlier this year over the trial of 16 Basques at Burgos.
This film was shot by Visnews cameraman, Michael Gore. Police arrested several tourists taking photos of them, and our cameraman had to hide in an apartment building to film the various scenes of police activity shortly after Easter Sunday mass.
