  • Description

A NEW SKYLINE OF CONCRETE AND GLASS IS SPRINGING UP IN PARIS, A CITY WHERE HUGE HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS HAVE SPROUTED DURING THE LAST TEN YEARS. LIKE MANY OTHER BIG CITIES, THE FRENCH CAPITAL IS GROWING UPWARDS IN SKYSCRAPER BLOCKS OF FLATS.
AN AMBITIOUS GOVERNMENT PLAN FOR THE FRENCH CAPITAL WILL AFFECT THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF A MILLION PARISIANS, LEAD TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF 350,000 NEW HOMES AND TRANSFORM MUCH OF THE OLDER SECTIONS OF THE CAPITAL.
WHAT HAS MADE THIS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME NECESSARY IS AN EXPECTED GROWTH OF THE CITY'S POPULATION FROM EIGHT TO FOURTEEN MILLION IN THE NEXT FORTY YEARS, AND THE INCREASING DEMANDS OF PEOPLE FOR SPACE FOR ALL THEIR ACTIVITIES. AS A RESULT, THE AMOUNT OF LAND COVERED WITH BUILDINGS IN THE PARIS REGION IS EXPECTED TO DOUBLE BY THE YEAR 2000.
THE OLD PARIS IS ALREADY BECOMING A SMALL ISLAND SURROUNDED BY THE NEW SUBURBIA. THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S BLUEPRINT FOR THE CAPITAL CALLS FOR EIGHT NEW URBAN CENTRES TO FILL THE GAP BETWEEN THE METROPOLITAN CENTRE AND THE OUTER SUBURBS.
A WHOLE NEW TRANSPORT SYSTEM WILL BE PROVIDED TO MEET NEW NEEDS. BY THE YEAR 2000, EIGHT MOTORWAYS WILL CONVERGE ON THE SKYSCRAPERS, APARTMENT BLOCKS, HOTELS AND SHOPPING CENTRES OF A NEW CITY.
THE GOVERNMENT INTENDS THE GROWTH OF PARIS IN THE URBAN AREAS TO PROVIDE A MIXTURE OF TOWN AND COUNTRY PROVIDING PLACES FOR LIVING, WORKING AND PLEASURE. THE IDEA BEHIND THESE URBAN CENTRES IS THAT THEY WILL BE SUFFICIENTLY SELF-CONTAINED TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF THE CAPITAL ITSELF.
