    TRANSCRIPT

NEWSCASTER ..THIS IS THE TAPE FROM JAPANESE TELEVISION OF THE ACTUAL JOAN BAEZ CONCEPT IN QUESTION. THE MAN WITH MISS BAEZ IS JAPANESE T.V. PRODUCER & INTERPRETER, ICHURO TAKASAKI. WHAT FOLLOWS ARE THE COMMENTS MISS BAEZ MADE TO HER JAPANESE SPEAKING AUDIENCE, THEN TAKASAKI'S INTERPRETATION OF THOSE REMARKS.

BAEZ PLEASE TELL THEM THANK YOU FOR COMING TONIGHT, AND I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR PUTTING UP WITH THE TELEVISION THIS EVENING. I WAS ANXIOUS TO HAVE THE TELEVISION WORK TONIGHT BECAUSE THE MONEY FROM THAT WILL GO TO SURVIVORS OF NAGASAKI

TAKASIKI TRANSLATES INTO JAPANESE. TITLES IN ENGLISH APPEAR ON FILM BUT ARE DIFFICULT TO READ

BAEZ IT WAS NO DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER CONCERTS AT WHICH MR. TAKASAKI HAD BEEN INTERPRETING.. AND AT THAT PARTICULAR CONCERT I SAID TO THE AUDIENCE I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THEM FOR PUTTING UP WITH UP WITH THE T.V. CAMERAL IN THE PIT BECAUSE THE MONEY FROM THE T.V. SHOW WOULD GO TO THE SURVIVORS OF NAGASAKI. MR. TAKASAKI TRANSLATED IT AND I DIDN'T NEAR HIM SAY THE WORD "NAGASAKI". BY THEN I WAS VERY SUSPICIOUS. I THOUGHT MAYBE HE DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH VERY WELL AND THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I ALSO FELT HE DIDN'T WANT TO SAY ANYTHING POLITICAL AND THAT HE WAS FRIGHTENED IN GENERAL

INTERVIEWER THER'VE BEEN ALLEGATIONS THAT MR. TAKASAKI WAS THREATENED BY THE CIA OR SOMEBODY IN OUR GOVERNMENT. WHAT'S YOUR REACTION TO ALL THIS?

BAEZ IT SEEMS TO ME ITS FRINGING ON DISASTER WHEN I CAN'T TRAVEL TO A FOREIGN COUNTRY AND OPEN MY MOUTH AND SAY ANYTHING CONCERNING THE WORLD SITUATION AND NOT HAVE IT TRANSLATED TO THE PUBLIC. IT JUST PLAIN PURE FREEDOM OF SPEECH THAT HAS DISAPPEARED AND IT THINK IT SHOULD BE MENTIONED THAT MR. TAKASAKI WAS INTELLIGENT MAN - IT ISN'T AS THOUGH HE WAS SOME KING OF CONFUSE GOOD THAT THEY PICKED UP. THE COMPANY HAD FOUND WHAT WAS ALREADY A FIRST RATE INTERPRETER AND SO WHATEVER THE ...THREATENING WAS, IT HAD HIM IN SUCH A STATE THAT HE COULDN'T INTERPRET ANYTHING. IF I MADE A COMMENT ON THE WEATHER IN JAPAN, HE THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE POLITICAL CONTENT AND WOULD SAY "MISS BAEZ WELCOMES YOU HERE THIS EVENING" AND TO SAY THAT ANYBODY, NOT JUST ME, SHOULD BE HUSHED UP BY THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT IS VERY, VERY BAD.
