Background: New-look churches...they have their own part to play in the development of new towns in the South of England, U.K.
And at Canvey Island, Essex, a church that night be a windmill. The design helps to keep a link with Holland that began in the 17th century when the island was reclaimed by Dutch engineers.
A 20th century town needs a 20th century church...at least that's the view at Stevenage, Hertfordshire, The belfry operates electronically. It has a key position half way between the shops and houses, and is the centre for six daughter churches. There is room for congregations of up to 800 or 900 - and still a great sense of space.
Hemel Hempstead is a new town with a different view. The design, from an idea by the vicar, provides a church where a small congregation will not feel lost. But for special occasions the church can be enlarged by pulling back a sliding wall that screens a section normally used as a theatre.
Another church by the sea, but with a more conventional approach. Saint Luke's at Southend, Essex, has been built to serve a large housing estate, and it is the first new church in the town for twenty years. There is room for 300 people to sit in comfort. New materials...but an old tradition...a mural over the altar. Devoted to Saint Luke, the mural shows twelve stages from his life; and it includes the traditional symbol of the Saint...a winged ox.
