  • Description

BY SPECIAL PERMISSION OF THE FRENCH MINISTER FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND THE PREFECT OF POLICE, GREEK PAINTER NONDA HAS MOUNTED A ONE-MAN EXHIBITION OF HIS CANVASES UNDER ONE OF THE ARCHES OF THE PONT NEUF IN PARIS.

HUNG ON A LONG STRIP OF SACK CLOTH FOR THE INSPECTION OF THE CROWDS OF SIGHTSEERS STROLLING ALONG THE RIVER BANK, NONDA'S PAINTINGS ARE ATTRACTING MANY A PROSPECTIVE BUYER. THEY ARE RESOLUTELY MODERN, AND THE MATERIALS THAT WENT INTO THEIR MAKING ARE SAID TO INCLUDE OX BLOOD, CHARCOAL AND STRANDS OF COTTON.

ALMOST MORE REMARKABLE THAN NONDA'S ARTISTIC PRODUCTS IS THE TEMPORARY DOMICILE HE HAS HAD ERECTED TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR HIM TO KEEP A DAY AND NIGHT WATCH OVER THEM. IT IS A HUGE HORSE MADE OF TUBULAR STEEL SCAFFOLDING ENCASED IN PLANKS OF WOOD AND PASTED OVER WITH SHEETS OF NEWSPAPER. INSIDE THERE IS ONE COMFORTABLE, WELL-FURNISHED ROOM WHERE THE ARTIST IS WORKING, EATING AND SLEEPING -- A MODERN PAINTER'S PRACTICAL LOOK-OUT AND A FAR CRY FROM THE LEGENDARY "IVORY TOWER".
