  • Description

Prime Minister Long Boret returned to Phnom Penh on Tuesday (8 April) amid conflicting reports that moves were under way for talks with insurgent forces surrounding the Khmer Republic capital.

Mr. Boret returned after accompanying President Lon Nol to the Indonesian tourist island of Bali, which the latter is expected to leave soon, permanently, for the United States.

During a stop-over in Bangkok on his way back to Phnom Penh, Mr. Long Boret was asked whether he had met Khmer Rouge representatives and whether he had any hopes for a peaceful settlement of the war. He replied: "We are talking about that in Indonesia and Bangkok. I will elaborate later."
But according to later information reaching Bangkok, the Khmer caretaker leader has since flatly denied meeting any Communist "opposition" figure in the Thai capital. That claim had been made by Thailand's Foreign Minister Chatichai Choonhaven, who has seemed eager to assume a mediator's role.

But exactly whom Mr. Long Boret was supposed to have seen in the Thai capital -- as well as the topic of their discussions, if any -- remained a mystery after his return to Phnom Penh.
