SYNOPSIS: In the Khmer Republic -- formerly known as Cambodia -- spiralling prices have caused a wave of bitterness against the Chinese population who control much of the country's economy. The steady inflation, the result of a faltering war economy, is typified by the fuel situation. Fuel for transport and domestic use is one of the country's scarcest commodities and people queue for hours outside gasoline stations, then re-sell their quota for a profit.

In a move to forestall possible violence against the 400-thousand-strong Chinese community, Phnom Penh authorities have ordered that all sings not written in Khmer or French must be removed. The order was directed primarily against the Chinese merchants who use Chinese characters to advertise their business.

Recently, young extremists calling themselves Youth for Salvation have been threatening to take action against Chinese merchants whose shop front or tea-house signs do not conform to specifications. Small pockets of violence have already occurred in the provincial centres.
