  • Description

The People's Republic of China Foreign Minister Chi Peng-Fei arrived in Karachi on Sunday (17 June) for talks with Pakistan's leaders.

Mr. Chi, who leads a twenty-two man delegation, is the first high-ranking Chinese official to visit Pakistan since President Bhutto's trip to Peking last January. He was travelling from Iran, where he'd had talks with the Shah of Iran. Mr. Chi will stay three days in Pakistan.

A cloud of dust over most of the Punjab prevented the Chinese party's aircraft from landing at Islamabad, and the flight was diverted to Karachi.

The Chinese Foreign Minister was greeted with the slogans: "Long Live Chairman Mao". In a statement to waiting newsmen, Mr. Chi said he would exchange views with Pakistani leaders on bilateral relations and on international questions of common concern.

Later in Karachi, he met Pakistan's Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Aziz Ahmed, to discuss the situation in South-East Asia, and relations between Pakistan and India.
