  • Description

On vacation in Eire for two weeks, a group of Switzerland's finest anglers, hired a picturesque Ashford castle in County Mayo where the rivers, the Irish say, are the best in Europe for salmon.

With their tackle, they have not much more than a line's cast to reach the river and lake from the castle entrance. Then away in boats or a day's serene fishing.

Ashford Castle, dating back to the Middle Ages, is privately- owned. The waters of Lake Corrib - Ireland's second largest lake - almost lap the castle walls. It teams with Atlantic salmon, trout, char pike perch, bream and rudd.

The Castle was used by film directory John Ford as a background to his film "the Quiet Man".

The ten man Swiss party is the latest to holiday here since the first arrived three years ago.

This same castle, John Ford, the well known film director, used as a background drop to his film, The Quiet Man. It's rivers are also the best salmon rivers in Europe.

Film shows the men leaving the castle, getting ready their tackle, close ups etc, walking down to the river through the castle entrance. Heading off in boats for the fishing grounds. Shots also of he castle.
