    INTRODUCTION
In London, the British and French Prime Ministers Mr. James Callaghan and Monsieur Raymond Barre on Tuesday (11 January) discussed holding a western economic summit in the next few months, possibly in Britain. The previous week there were indications that French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing may have surprised British officials when he said he expected the next western economic summit to be held in Britain in June. British officials declined comment at the time, and he precise timing and venue will still probably only be finalised after Mr. Jimmy Carter is inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20.

SYNOPSIS: The original purpose of M. Barre's visit was to attend the seasonal dinner of the French Chamber of Commerce in London but he later decided to meet the British Prime Minister James Callaghan.

The talks lasted one and a half hours, which was longer than expected. Official sources said they covered the whole field of the world economy. Mr. Barre later told the Chamber of Commerce Dinner that Britain's economic future beyond her present difficulties was highly promising. He said french firms were increasingly participating in Britain's successful search for oil in the North Sea. M. Barre added that building Europe was a necessity and the British people, who had for so long looked to the world rather than Europe, had now fully grasped this.
