  • Description

President Siad Barre of Somalia, current Chairman of the organisation of African Unity, was given an enthusiastic welcome on his arrival in Monrovia on Saturday (23 November) for talks with Liberia's President William Tolbert.

The visit was part of his tour of several african countries.

Although he arrived on Saturday -- the usual market day in Liberia -- huge crowds turned out to see him.

During his three-day visit, President Barre was expected to take part in ceremonies including the naming of a freeway, laying the cornerstone at a new market and visiting a university farm.

He also laid a wreath on the grave of Liberia's pioneers at the the Centennial Memorial Square. He accompanied by Liberia's Vice-President, James Edward Greens.

Later, after talks with Liberian leaders, President Barre said he hoped there would be closer co-operation among the African countries in areas of sea and land transportation, telecommunications, financial institutions, news media and common defence.
