    PRIME MINISTER HOUARI BOUMIEDIENNE OF ALGERIA, ON SUNDAY (20 MARCH) OFFICIALLY OPENED THE FIRST STAFF-OWNED OIL PIPELINE IN THE ARAB WORLD. ALGERIA'S THIRD PIPELINE, IT LINKS THE SARAHA OILFIELD AT HAOUD EL HARA AND THE MEDITERRANEAN PORT OF ARZEW, 497 MILES (800 KILOMETRES) AWAY. THE PIPELINE WAS BUILT BY JOHN BROWN, A BRITISH FIRM, AT A COST OF GBP26,000.000 STERLING. THE STATE PETROLEUM TRANSPORT AND MARKETING COMPANY (SONATACH) OWNS THE PIPELINE WHICH WAS ALREADY IN OPERATION BEFORE THE PRIME MINISTER PERFORMED THE OFFICIAL CEREMONY OIL IS FLOWING THE 7--CENTIMETRE (28 INCHES) DIAMETER PIPE AT A RATE OF 10 MILLION TONS A YEAR. THIS WILL BE INCREASED TO 22 MILLION TONS BEFORE THE END OF NEXT YEAR WHEN TWO FURTHER PUMPING STATIONS HAVE BEEN ADDED. BY THIS, ALGERIA'S TOTAL OIL PRODUCTION WILL RISE TO ABOUT 42,000,000 TONS OF CRUDE OIL IN A YEAR.
