  • Description

A memorial mass was held in Caracas, Venezuela, on Saturday (22 April) for a former member of the Allende Communist government of Chile, who was assassinated about 18 months ago.

SYNOPSIS: A large number of exiled political radicals from Chile were in Caracas for the memorial service for Orlando Letelier, a senior minister in the Allende government. Before the coup which installed the present military government in Chile, Senor Letelier was Chancellor, Minister of the Interior and Minister of Defence, and a former ambassador to the United States. At the time of the coup, he had returned to Chile, and was arrested there, and placed as a prisoner on Dawson Island, together with other leading political detainees. Orlando Letelier's mother and father were both at the memorial mass in Caracas. His mother told newsmen that, despite claims by Chile's president General Pinochet, that no Chilean had killed her son; she was sure the new Chilean government was behind his death.

The memorial service in Caracas was organised by the socialist Party of Chile, many of whose members are exiles in Venezuela. April the thirteenth would have been Orlando Letelier's birthday. Among speeches at the memorial service was a discussion of the effects of General Pinochet's promised amnesty for political prisoners.
