Background: Nigeria's 26 million Moslems have been celebrating the Id Al-Fitr festival which marks the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan.

Ramadan is based on a lunar month, which ended with the sighting of the new moon Tuesday (15 October). Wednesday and Thursday were declared a public holiday throughout the country, where Moslems account for over half the 50-million populations.

Nigeria's Moslem population is concentrated in the north and western areas. In Zaire, in the northern region, the two-days of Fitr celebrations began in traditional colourful style. The first day is know locally as Fallah Day.

As usual, prayers -- held in the open air -- began the day's activities. In Zaire these are followed by displays of horsemanship, watched by the Emir, Alhaji Mohammadu Aminu, and the Provincial Secretary, Alhaji T. Mallumfashi.

In a speech the Emir urged local Authority staff to be thrifty and all present to pay their taxes promptly. He also voiced his optimism over an expected bumper harvest following unusually-heavy rains in the area this year.
