  • Description

In Western Queensland, the drought had found an ally in laying bare the Mitchell grass country between Blackall and Isisford.Big mobs of half-starved kangaroos are rooming through the Mitchell grass, eating three times as much as the sheep which are grazing there.

One solution remains for graziers: the importation of professional kangaroo shooters. And this is the action that has been taken.

Kangaroos shooters are reaping a considerable profit. They can sell both the kangaroo meat and skins. The average price for ??? carcases is 3d a lb - which makes most kills worth 12/6d for meat alone.

The shooters work by night from fast trucks equipped with spotlights. After a night's shooting, the carcases are collected and carried to the base camp. But the shooters say they've had little effect on the kangaroo population.A portable freezing unit prepares the carcases for the semi-trailer trip to St.George and the processing plant.
