    Background: OLNEY, BUCKS, ENGLAND

Women in the remote English village of Olney took part in an ancient English ritual on 23 February 1982 - the Shrove Tuesday pancake race. This involves running over a course while tossing a pancake in a frying pan.

Its believed that the pancake legend began in Olney back in 1455, when a woman ran to the church after hearing the bell ring for Shrove Tuesday (start of Lent) while she was still clutching a frying pan with a pancake.
