Background: Paris firemen stood by Feb 22 when the manufacturers of a floating fire barrier demonstrated their product in a dramatic display on the Seine at Gennevilliers.
Designed to prevent blazing oil from spreading on water, the inflatable barrier was towed out in mid-stream where it was formed in a circle. Into the circle, an official of the Paris Municipal Laboratories poured 7,000 litres of highly inflammable fuel, and ignited it from the river bank by means of an electrical switch.
Smoke and flames tumbled high into the sky, and although the barrier must have been subjected to intense heat, it successfully contained the flames within the circle.
The barrier could also be used to prevent the pollution of beaches and rivers by oil discharged from ships. By encircling the guilty vessel, the barrier would contain the offending waste until it could be removed.
