  • Description

DANES WENT TO THE POLLS IN NATION-WIDE ELECTIONS TODAY (TUESDAY). THE FATE OF THE LONG-STANDING SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT WAS AT STAKE. PRIME MINISTER JENS OTTO KRAG'S PARTY HAS RULED IN COALITION WITH THE RADICALS FOR THE LAST ELEVEN YEARS.

THE PRIME MINISTER WAS AT THE POLLS EARLY. DURING THE DAY HE RECEIVED A MESSAGE FROM MR KHRUSHCHEV, CONGRATULATING HIM ON HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY. THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER WHO MET MR. KRAG DURING HIS RECENT VISIT TO DENMARK ALSO EXPRESSED THE CONVICTION THAT THE "GOOD NEIGHBOUR RELATIONS" BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES WOULD CONTINUE TO GROW.

MR. KRAG, SEEN HERE VOTING, SENT A TELEGRAM OFF THANKING MR. KHRUSHCHEV FOR HIS MESSAGE.

FOR THE FIRST TIME DANES AGED 21 WERE ABLE TO CAST THEIR VOTES. BEFORE, THE VOTING AGE USED TO BE 23. 3,097,000 PEOPLE WERE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE AND VOTING STATIONS REPORTED A HIGHER POLL THAN AT PREVIOUS ELECTIONS.

ALSO SHOWN IS MR AXEL LARSEN. LEADER OF THE MINORITY PEOPLE'S SOCIALIST PARTY - ONE OF SEVEN CONTESTING THE ELECTION.

FOREIGN POLICY AS AN ELECTION ISSUE HAS BEEN ALMOST IGNORED. IT IS THE DOMESTIC ISSUES THAT DOMINATE - HOUSING, TAXATION, IMPROVING LIVING STANDARDS, SOCIAL WELFARE AND THE BOOMING ECONOMY.

(WITH ABOUT HALF THE VOTES COUNTED IN THE SMALL HOURS OF WEDNESDAY, THE NATION LOOKED LIKE HAVING A MINORITY GOVERNMENT UNDER HERR KRAG FOR FURTHER FOUR-YEAR TERM.)
