  • Description

"Europeans" .. "Natives." Two words meaning racial segregation in Johannesburg, South Africa. Two words signposted at the rail station, at bus stops, outside shops, cinemas, in parks and at swimming pools.

For Whites and Blacks a separate way in and a separate way out for a rail ticket, a bus seat, or for a postage stamp at the post office. The sign: Native Shop is obligatory for non-White shoppers.

Most Johannesburg cinemas are - as the ticket states - for Whites only. Cinemas in the native quarters are few.

In the City's Zoological Park, signs 'E' (Europeans) indicate who may not sit on the benches. This applies to all parks in the City. it also applies to all swimming pools. The nearest pool for natives is at Orlando, 14 miles out.

The Orlando Pool was built by public subscription organised by Father Trevor Huddleston - the man leading a month-long boycott campaign in the UK.
