  • Description

In another, spectacular attempt to topple King Hassan of Morocco, jet fighters of the Moroccan Air Force today (Wednesday) launched two attacks over the capital, Rabat.

The first attack was at the airport. It happened as the royal aircraft brought King Hassan back from a visit to France. Several people were reported killed and wounded as one of the jets strafed a crowd of officials and ministers waiting to greet the King. Passengers aboard the royal aircraft were also thought to be among the casualties.

A Foreign Ministry communique said the King was safe and claimed the three attacking jets were supposed to be escorting the King's aircraft. After the King was rushed away from the airport, three fighters made a second attack -- this time on the Royal Palace in Rabat.

Loyalist troops were reported to have been sent to Morocco's Kenitra airbase and to have taken control of it without firing a shot. The fate of the King, following the second attack, was not immediately known -- though his brother said in a radio interview that he was safe and that order had been restored.

In view of this new attempt on the life of King Hassan, we reissue our profile of the Moroccan monarch. It was originally compiled last year shortly after he had survived an attempted coup and embarked on a vigorous reform programme -- fighting corruption, distributing land to peasants, raising wages and abolishing certain taxes.
