    A THREATENED STRIKE BY TEN THOUSAND WORKER SAT THE BRITISH NAVAL BASE IN SINGAPORE HAS BEEN POSTPONED FOR A WEEK AFTER THE NAVAL BASE UNION HAD BEEN TOLD BY THE ADMIRALTY THAT PICKETING WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED WITHIN THE BASE.

    THE WORKERS ARE EMPLOYED TO MAINTAIN AND REPAIR SHIPS USING THE BASE; STORES AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS.

    THE NAVAL BASE IS A FENCED AREA COVERING SOME THREE THOUSAND ACRES AND WAS BUILT SHORTLY AFTER WORLD WAR ONE.CONSTRUCTION DID NOT START UNTIL 1924.THE DOCKYARD WAS OPENED IN 1937.
