    Arab Ministers of Social Affairs have been meeting in Egypt to discuss a unified strategy for social welfare in the Arab World.

    SYNOPSIS: The Arab League's headquarters' in Cairo was the venue for the meeting, which began on Monday.

    Among the delegates was Egypt's new Minister of Social Affairs, Mrs Amal Osman, who was appointed last month.

    Among later arrivals were the chairman of the conference, Saudi Arabia's Minister of Social Affairs, Mr Ibrahim Al-Ankari, and officials representing the Arab League, which had sponsored the conference.

    Discussions at the conference were to include recommendations made recently by a committee of social welfare experts for the development of desert communities. Egypt has already drafted plans for establishing several desert cities in an effort to bring life to its barren regions.

    The chairman, Mr Al-Ankari, takes his place between the Arab league's Secretary-General Mahmoud Riad, of Egypt (left) and his assistant, Assad Al Assad of Lebanon.

    Delegates represented the 22 member states of the Arab league, and were either Ministers of Social Affairs, or ministerial representatives. They were welcomed by Mr Riad, who made the opening address. A unified penal code based on Islamic law was also to be discussed.
