  • Description

President Gamal Abdul Nasser of the United Arab Republic reported to the National Assembly in Cairo Jan. 23 on his recent visit to Casab Casablanca to attend the African 'Summit Conference'. His speech coincide with news of the withdrawal of U.A.R. troops from the United Nations force in the Congo.

Secretary General Hammarskjoeld has been asked to arrange an "early repatriation" of the 519 U.A.R. troops serving in the Congo. This move follows the signing of the recent Casablanca declaration by six African leaders, in which they threatened to withdraw their contingents unless the United Nations modified its policy towards helping Lumumba adherents.

Two other signatories, Morocco, with 3,240 troops, and Guinea with 749, have not yet taken steps to withdraw their forces immediately. The other signatories were Ghana, Libya and Mali.
