  • Description

A group of striking workers protesting against 47 dismissals planned by the French division of Air Canada prevented one of the company's airlines from taking off from Roissy International Airport, near Paris, on Wednesday (23 April).

By Thursday (24 April) the group of about 100 Air Canada employees still had the jet immobilised-despite negotiations with French police, who want it moved because it is blocking access to a runway.

The striking workers are also occupying offices in central Paris and at the airport. They are demanding that the planned layoffs should be abandoned and that all workers for Air Canada in France should continue in their previous employment situation with the company.

The strikers' spokesman said that relations with Air Canada's General Manager for Europe, Guy Chiasson, were not very good and that they preferred to negotiate with the company's Vice-President, Mr. Damour, who was due to meet their representatives on Friday (April 25).
