BUT THE AUDIENCE OF BETWEEN 2000-3000, DESCRIBED AS SMALLER THAN THE USUAL CROWD", WERE COMPARATIVELY QUIET - 100 MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT WERE INVITED BUT THEY DID NOT APPEAR.

    THE MAIN SPEAKER OF THE AFTERNOON WAS THE 89-YEAR-OLD LEADER OF THE MOVEMENT, LORD BERTRAND RUSSELL, WHO, PLEADED THE CASE FOR A NEUTRAL BRITAIN, REFERRED TO THE SIZE OF HER ARMY.

    LORD RUSSELL WENT ON TO SAY: "I DON'T THINK THAT THE COUNTRY REALISES THE VERY CONSIDERABLE LIKELIHOOD OF A NUCLEAR WAR WITHIN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS - IF ANY OF YOU ARE ALIVE A YEAR HENCE YOU WILL BE LUCKY".
