  • Description

Visnews filmed New York's Idlewild Airport May 4 as Sir Winston Churchill arrived from London by BOAC Comet to be greeted by President Eisenhower and his old friend Bernard Baruch.

Sir Winston came to the United States on a three-day private visit as a guest of the President.

The elder statesman's arrival made the headlines in all American newspapers. "The Olympian man of the century" said the New York Times. The Herald Tribune proclaimed: "A familiar and ever-welcome figure will be in the land today...we only hope HE doesn't find old-age has slowed US up too much."
Soon after arrival at New York, the 84-year-old Sir Winston left in Ike's personal aircraft for Washington where he will stay at the White House.

Latest reports from official sources at the White House say that ex-President Harry Truman has declined an invitation to dine with Sir Winston, due to a previous engagement. "He is one of the three great men of our age" said Truman.
