  • Description

INTRODUCTION The United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, he expressed optimism on the prospects for permanent peace in the Middle East. On the final leg of his six-nation peace-seeking tour of the Middle East, aimed at resuming the 1973 Geneva conference, he said he'd found strong interest on both sides in reconvening the talks.

SYNPOSIS: Dr. Waldheim's last port of call was Egypt, which is leading the Arab drive to resume the Geneva Conference. Before leaving, he held a meeting with Egyptian foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi. Afterwards, he said 'new elements' had arisen during his tour, which also took him to Saudi Arabia, syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Israel. He also had talks with the Palestine Liberation Organisation -- the PLO -- over which the current negotiations are centred. Arab nations and the Soviet Union insist on the PLO's direct participation in the Geneva Conference, while Israel and the United States oppose this. Israel says the PLO should be represented only as part of a pan-Arab delegation.

On leaving Cairo, Dr. Waldheim told newsmen about the impressions he'd formed during his tour.
