  • Description

Thousands of Cubans crowded the square in front of Havana's Presidential Palace, October 26, at a "million-member anti-United States" rally and demonstration of support for Prime Minister Fidel Castro. The crowd were addressed by Castro, who arrived in the square by helicopter; Senor David Salvador, Confederation of Labour secretary-general; President Osvaldo Dorticos; and by Army Chief of Staff Major Camilo Cienfuegos. The Labour Confederation had stopped all work except for essential services, enabling people to attend the rally.

The Cuban leaders boosted demands that the U.S. prevent anti-Castro Cubans in Florida from making flights over Cuba to drop arms and anti-Government leaflets.

Castro claims Cuba is being subjected to aggression from the United States. Chief cause of complaint being the anti-Castro leaflet raids attributed to a former officer of Castro's air force, Major Pedro Diaz Lanz, said to be organizing the raids from obscure bases in Florida, U.S.A. At the time of the rally, a Florida Federal Judge, decided against issuing a warrant for the arrest of Lanz for extradition to Cuba.
