"A very fine beginning" said US President Eisenhower at the end of the first leg - a three day stay in Rome - on his 23,000 mile, eleven nation, three continent tour. He arrived by helicopter at Ciampino Airport Dec 6 after an audience of Pope John XXIII at the Vatican.

At Ciampino to bid him farewell were Italian Premier Segni and Foreign Minister Pella. After speeches the President boarded his Boeing 707-jet airliner - "The Flying White House" - and took off for Ankara, Turkey.

An unprecedented welcome of great enthusiasm was accorded President Eisenhower on his arrival at Ankara Dec 6. Greeted by Turkish President Celal Bayar, he was cheered and applauded all along the route from airport to city centre. In an open car once belonging to Kemal Ataturk, founder of modern Turkey, the two President's drove beneath triumphal arches, and along streets festooned with flags and buntings.

President Eisenhower will depart Ankara Dec 7 for Karachi, Pakistan.
