THE PEOPLE OF SOUTHERN MOZAMBIQUE ARE ENDURING THE REGION'S WORST FLOODING FOR THIRTY YEARS, AND ARE FACING THE PROSPECT OF MORE TORRENTIAL RAIN.

SOME AREAS RECEIVED UP TO FOURTEEN INCHES OF RAIN IN 48 HOURS LAST WEEKEND.

THOUSANDS OF CROPS OF SUGAR, MAIZE, COTTON, RICE AND BANANAS HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED, SCORES OF CATTLE DROWNED AND COMMUNICATIONS SERIOUSLY DISRUPTED BECAUSE OF WASHED-OUT ROADS AND RAILWAY LINES.

OFFICIAL ESTIMATED OF DAMAGE ARE NOT YET AVAILABLE, BUT ON THURSDAY ONE OFFICIAL SAID IT WAS UNLIKELY THAT THE DAMAGE WOULD BE A HIGH AS WAS ORIGINALLY THOUGHT. FIRST ESTIMATES PUT THE DAMAGE AT MILLIONS OF POUNDS STERLING.
