SYNOPSIS: Crowds gathered at a bus station in Tel Aviv on Tuesday after a hand grenade exploded in a washroom, injuring nine people. Police and troops quickly cordoned off the building--which has on several occasions been the target for Arab guerrilla attacks. Soon after the blast the police stopped all city buses until each vehicle had been thoroughly searched. All passengers waiting for the buses were closely watched.

Police rounded up about three hundred Arabs, saying it was for their own protection. The explosion had occurred during the second day of the trial of Kozo Okamoto--the Japanese accused of taking part in the Lod Airport massacre. Arab guerrilla organisations claimed credit for the massacre--and Israeli police believe the bus station blast was another of their actions.

Damage caused by the explosion was minor and was confined to the washroom.
